HEBDEN BRIDGE steps in High Hirst Woodmeadow,

Rich and Neil D. met in High Hirst Woodmeadow to create an alternative, less steep route near the top of a popular permissive path used by visitors going through the meadow. Today's work was funded by Hebden Royd Town Council.

Rich setting out the new steps

After first delineating the new line of the path from the Viewing Area, initially with steel rods and then - once they were happy with the route - old walling stones, they built four steps of a new, zigzag path around the foundations of an old, ruined, drystone wall.

Strimming the route of the new path from the Viewing Area above Sandy Gate. With use, the path will become more obvious especially if it is kept short in the summer months by regular strimming.

Once Rich had adjusted the angles and levels he worked in turn with Neil to knock in the stobs with the heavy bar.

Rich adds the final touch - a waymarker arrow to indicate the correct direction round the old drystone wall to the top of the field.

The work was funded by Hebden Royd Town Council as part of their Climate Emergency and Biodiversity Committee's project to create a Woodmeadow on land below Dodd Naze above Sandy Gate.

Job done!

The project has its own group of volunteers, the 'Friends of High Hirst Woodmeadow', who meet regularly to undertake conservation work on the woodmeadow.
