HEBDEN BRIDGE: Foster Dam footbridge revisited

 Foster Dam: some finishing touches.

Ken and Frank H took advantage of a clear, reasonably warm morning to add an infill strip, a side-trim, a low cross-rail and an approach step to the footbridge that was constructed on Wednesday.

Map 1: Location of the footbridge? It's that faint blue dot!

This work and other repairs along the Foster Dam path are being funded by Trustees of the Foster Dam area, Hebden Royd Town Council, friends and family of Tim Mihailovic, and individual donations. Many thanks.

The detail

1. Infill strip, side-trim and cross-rail.

Picture 1:

i) The walkway needs an infill strip to go between the end cross-tread and the end wall.

ii) The right-hand edge of the walkway (there's an exposed drop into the dam leat) needs a side-trim. This will be both decorative (it hides edge blemishes) and functional (it acts as a 'stop' for any misplaced foot).

iii) A strategically placed lower cross-rail is needed to fill the off-set gap between the middle rail and the walkway.

And this is how it looks (picture taken from a  different angle) . . .

Picture 2:

Gap filled and side-trim in place as is lower cross-rail.

2: Access step at Hebden Water end of footbridge.

Picture 3:

Exposed (100 mm depth) stubs of bearers are just where a step needs to be. This was a trickier task but with careful measuring, accurate sawing and a bit of ingenuity a foot-friendly (300+ mm depth) platform step was created . . .

Picture 4:

Just as we had finished tidying up the site, the clear, reasonably warm morning became cloudy and icily wet . . . time to retreat to the depot to clean, dry and put away tools, and store unused timbers.

The footbridge part of the Foster Dam project is now finished apart from adding a 'memorial' plaque and making a decision as to whether the surface of the walkway would benefit from slip reducing measures.

More on this later in the week.
