COLDEN - Rough Hey Footbridge finishing touches

Rough Hey: footbridge over Colden Water

Jerry, Frank H and Ken finished off the work on the sturdy footbridge that was constructed by a CROWS' team last week (see blog for Wed 28th Aug).

The  footbridge crosses the Colden on a permissive path that links Eygpt Farm, Rough Hey (a ruin) and Lower Heath Farm.

On the Eygpt side, an extra anchoring bracket was added and the outer stringers were pinned to the main wooden bearer. On the Lower Heath side, cross-rails were installed to block access to the old bridge and some improvements were made to the dilapidated end-section of the field wall.

Here's an overall picture:

Final items:
Cross-rails installed at Lower Heath side of
footbridge. The lower rails have been extended
across the end of the bridge so they are an easy
step-over for walkers but high enough to deter
sheep . . . and hinder wayward mountain bikers!

This short session completed the work on this footbridge. We are pleased with the outcome. The bridge is stable, very safe, easy to negotiate, aesthetically pleasing and should be durable . . . even in South Pennine conditions!

Jobs are stacking-up, but we might be back in the next month or so to look at two problematic stiles.
