For Mick and Neil M. this was a two-task day. First we installed a marker post and reinstated a collapsed fingerpost at Stoodley Glen. Then it was off to Todmorden Moor to fettle the marker posts along one of the moorland footpaths. The work was funded by donations from the general public, which we acknowledge with thanks.
Details
The new marker post was to indicate where footpath 034 diverges
from the bridleway, and to direct walkers across the grassy field to a
small stone bridge crossing Stoodley Clough, guiding them away from the
Stoodley Glen terrace on one side and the garages on the other. A local
resident not only advised on the exact position for the post, but gave
us a hand with the work and proffered a monetary donation - many thanks!
Then, across the bridge and a short way uphill, this resident pointed
out a fallen fingerpost where the path meets the no-through-road
Stoodley Lane.
After cutting off the short rotten portion at the base, this post was soon restored to the vertical. (Mick remembered installing this post about 20 years ago. So it's in our diaries for August 2044 to go back and recheck it).
A contrasting scene awaited us up on the open moor, where we parked at
Guide Quarry, and walked the length of Footpath 079 down to where it
crosses the track that passes New Towneley Farm and West End Farm,
surveying all the marker posts which adorn this path.
Seven loose posts were firmed up, two that were on the ground were reinstated, and one new post was fitted where there was a long gap between existing posts. So we made it easier to stay on this path which presents no real challenges and offers good views over the town and beyond - recommended.
