TODMORDEN - Slant Lane

There were two teams out from Todmorden today:

Team 1: Mick and  Neil M were installing marker posts near Stoodley Glen and then re-instating posts across Todmorden Moor. (see separate blog).

Team 2: Andrew and Kasher were sorting out the stone steps on the upper reaches of Slant Lane (Tod FP 040). This 'lane' is often transformed into a river because, when the road drain at the top of the path becomes blocked, the water washes down to undercut the steps.

The original steps were cleared and shored-up where necessary, and one wooden step was installed. All these were pinned with rods rather than with wooden stobs so as to avoid damage to the surviving stone setts. Tread areas were in-filled with MOT which (hopefully) will bed-in and be less likely to wash away.

Once the blackberry season is over, we will return to cut back the vegetation.

Many thanks to the residents on the nearby house who provided refreshments and that most useful of items . . . an angle grinder!

Today's work on Slant Lane has been funded by Calderdale Highways. Many thanks.

Slant Lane: a footpath near Cross Stone.

1: (uphill view): a very high "step-up"
negotiable only by grabbing the nearby tree!

2. Mud, loose stone and vegetation cleared
to reveal some of the original concrete.

3. Work in progress: Original stone risers being braced.

4. Risers in place and being backfilled with stone.

5. Downhill view: Andrew and the in-filled tread..

6. Andrew unearthing an overgrown step.

7. The step has been cleared but . . .
. . . a second one has been found!
Will there be a third . . . a fourth . . . a fifth?
More investigation may be needed.

8. A clear surface and the original width revealed.
