Blake Dean: gate resurrection!
Kasher and Frank H returned to the site of last week's efforts to fit a gate in the wall where footpath Wadsworth 017 (marked on map) leads down to the footbridge where Alcomden Water forms a junction with Graining and Hebden Waters.
Last week's preliminary check revealed immovable screws fixing the hinges of the very dilapidated old gate. Solution? An angle grinder to make short work of both rust and hinges! The installation of the new gate could begin.
Held together by rust . . . and more open than usual! |
Today's work was funded by the family and friends of Tim Mihailovik. Thank you.
The Detail
1. Original gate and finger post:
The view across the valley is splendid. The old wooden gate is a different matter. Knowledgeable observers will spot the constructional fault - the diagonal brace has been incorrectly fitted!
Old hinges being removed. |
New gate fitted |
Hinge post anchored by bracket and closure spring fitted |
Testing, testing. The gate is self- closing. Rubber 'stops' (not visible) have been fitted to cushion the gate paling where it impacts on the wall. |
Quality control squad? We think the gate got the nod of approval! |
Drilling to fit the closure loop. Good technique:- stable stance and eye on the task; drill held firmly and aligned correctly. |
3. The end result
One smart-looking gate with a waymark arrow, a 'please shut the gate' sign and a difficult to miss yellow closure loop! |
