HEPTONSTALL - Walshaw Moor

Andrew, Jerry, Rich and Stella worked on the right-of-way Wadsworth 039 (see map) and tackled a couple of jobs: - a boardwalk had shed some of its slats and part of the path route had become obscured by sedge. Today's work funded by Heptonstall Fell Race.

 The details

Stella and Andrew cut back all the surrounding vegetation and cleared out all the rotten timbers. The boardwalk issue was more serious than just a few slats needing to be replaced. Part of one of the stringers had completely rotted off.

A bit of a mess!

They managed to create a structure to secure the boardwalk and the new slats, not quite as level as we would normally do, but functionally fine. Extra staples were added to the whole boardwalk to reduce slipping.

Due to the persistent  drizzle we neglected to take a photo of the completed work!

Meanwhile, Jerry and Rich walked up the path, found a yellow top post on the ground (which Andrew put back in) and using an OS map on the phone traced the route up the hillside. Using power and hand tools we cut back the sedge to make the route much clearer.

A short section that was very difficult to see

In the long run this path needs more yellow-topped posts to guide you to the stile over the top fence.

We had planned to do another job at Blake Dean but the bridge was impassable, so an early finish.
