BLACKSHAW HEAD - Packhorse bridge

How many CROWS and Drystone Wallers does it take to examine a small packhorse bridge? The answer today was seven - too many to actually stand on the bridge at any one time!

CROWS are trying to ensure that the small packhorse bridge over Daisy Bank Clough/Hippins Clough, in Blackshaw Head, does not disappear. We have agreed with the Mid-Lancashire branch of the Drystone Walling Association that they will rebuild a section of this iconic bridge which is in danger of collapsing into the clough.

A CROWS' work party has already cleared the vegetation from around the bridge to expose the stonework that needs replacing. Today's site meeting was to discuss the next steps forward.

Ken and Frank H will be building the wooden former that will act as a temporary support for the arch of the bridge during construction. Once this is available, the dry-stone walling team will dismantle the collapsing arch, install the former, and rebuild the arch. They will also use existing 'spare' stone to construct side-abutments to protect the structure from being undercut by the stream (a modest trickle in dry conditions . . . but more vigorous in the wet!)

CROWS will need to secure funding to restore this small but historically significant packhorse structure. If you are able to make a donation please go to our website to see how you can contribute. Many thanks.

The bridge: A unique double arch. The 'far'
half is sound but the 'near' half is in a state
of rotational collapse towards the stream.

There is a plan: Ken and Frank H discussing
next steps with the drystone walling team.

Clough junction: General view of the area with
notices describing the work to be done.

The long view - up, up, up  Daisy Bank
Clough that drains towards the bridge.
