WADSWORTH PECKET WELL

PECKET WELL - SOUTH SHIELDS AND DELF END

Ian S and Paul along with Nick were high up above Pecket Well this morning where field edge meets moorland. We were here to repair a stile near South Shield and to put in a marker post near Delf End.

A cloudy, hazy start kept the hot sun at bay until late morning. Our first job was to repair a stile on a path running up through the fields from Plumpton; well-used by fell runners to gain access to open moorland up to High Brown Knoll. The main stile upright had broken and collapsed over the stile steps.

We repaired this by untangling the stock fencing from the broken upright and removing the damaged cross-rails. A new upright was installed, and the stile put back together.

We then went on to install a new marker post near Delf End at the intersection of two moorland paths.

The Details:

We removed the old upright and replaced this with a new post.

Getting stuck in digging the hole!

The new post fitted perfectly into the old hole! We then replaced the cross rails using two new pieces in addition to a couple of the original ones. The stock fencing was reattached and the moorland grasses cut back to leave a neat finish.

The finished article!

The Marker Post

The view of South Shields from the Marker post site!

A new marker post was erected at the intersection of two footpaths that were difficult to identify on this stretch of moorland at the edge of the Pecket Well plateau.

Ian and Nick 'on the job'

It was becoming quite hot at this stage of the day, but thankfully the post hole was dug out and the post installed without too many problems.

A great view of Deer Stones Edge

Today's work was funded by Wadsworth Parish Council - thank you.
