TODMORDEN - Above Gorpley Clough

Today's team of Mick, David and Kasher started their day by acting as Sherpas to carry the timber and tools needed by Neil Mc and Frank H for their step-building quest in the Knotts Wood area.

On a day that threatened rain (but thankfully did not deliver) the trio then worked on one of the paths (Todmorden 129) at the very edge of Calderdale. After parking at Sharneyford, tools and timber were carried along the bridleway which leads towards Trough Edge End and is below Reaps Moss Wind Farm.

We managed to locate the start of the path despite the attentions of the impressive bull and his harem who were "loitering with intent" on the nearby bridleway.

Of the marker-posts across the moor towards the Keepers Cottage above Gorpley Clough, some were broken or not on the line of the walked path or completely missing. The team reinstated all of the broken yellow-topped marker posts, re-positioned the 'wayward' posts and installed seven new posts.

This work should make route finding easier - especially in poor conditions but the herd of cattle had other ideas . . . before we had even left the site, a re-instated finger post was in high demand as a convenient back-scratcher! We may have to replace this tall post with a short yellow-topped marker post; the latter are of less interest to cattle.

Today's work was funded by Todmorden Town Council. Many thanks.

Whilst moving one of the 'hidden' yellow-topped posts we came across this!

Possibly a collectors' item. Please give us a call if you know it's yours!

One finger post somewhat less than vertical. It just
shows what a nudge by a half-tonne bull can do!
