WADSWORTH - OLD TOWN
Ian S and Paul were out today above Chiserley working on the footpath from Old Laithe that winds its way up a slight gradient along the moor edge toward Old Town Reservoir. This path is vulnerable to erosion and rutting from rain water running off the fields above; this streams down through the heather directly onto the path. We had previously constructed revetment along the worst stretch of the path to channel water safely downhill on one side while also acting as an edge for the footpath on the other (higher) side.
Today's task was to extend the line of revetment where the path had been further damaged over the past twelve months.
It turned out to be a fairly bright morning as we set about lining up the long lengths of revetment before securing them place with stobs hammered into ground at set intervals.
We managed to line up the new length of timbers with the existing stretch of revetment although some very large and stubborn stones made this problematic!
Once the four lengths of revetment were in place we widened the footpath (on the left of the photo) by cutting into the banking and then we hollowed out the channel to the right to direct the flow of water away from the main path.
The widened path needs bedding in and the deepened channel needs testing out so we will revisit the site in the coming weeks to review 'progress'.
This work was funded by Wadsworth Parish Council. Thank you.
