A team of eight was out today to complete four significant jobs on a section of the Coiners' Walk. Work funded by Friends of Calderdale Countryside.
WIDENING THE PATH AT LOWER LUMB LODGE (turquoise on the map)
The path was very narrow and sloping, making it difficult to use. Nick and Jerry widened the whole length and a piece of revetment was put in to secure the edge of the path.
THE GATEWAY DROP BELOW LOWER LUMB LODGE
The challenge was to deal with a 60 cm drop, very close to a gate and a mature oak tree.
Frank S and Andrew built three steps between the gate and the big rock.
Then after lunch and much discussion, they added a fourth step outside the gate, so there is somewhere to stand while you unlatch the gate.
THE PATH HEADING NORTH FROM LOWER LUMB (green on the map)
The path goes through a stand of invasive holly which was encroaching over the path. Kasher and Rich and later Jerry cut back the whole length of path. A waymark post was also put in at an unclear junction of paths.
DRAINAGE ON THE PATH DOWN TO CRAGG BROOK (yellow on the map)
An old pond was leaking over the wide path making it a quagmire. The landowner had uncovered a stone trough in the middle of the field, so the task was to find the old stone drain that connected the two. Ginny and Neil D put in some channels to take the water off the path, but finally uncovered a stone drain. The water going down the drain was a great sight (it doesn't look much in the photo!). It will need a return visit to see whether more work is needed.
Many thanks to the landowners for helping us improve these paths.
