BREARLEY WOODS Part 2

Frank H, Andrew, Neil D and Rich completed 3 tasks funded by Calderdale Council Highways.

Since last week, the bluebells are showing their 'heads' . . . a joy to be seen!

WAYMARKING

Three extra waymark posts were put in and a finger post re-seated. The routes through the woods should now be obvious!

CUTTING BACK

Several sections of paths with encroaching holly were cut back and a couple of trip hazards dealt with.

STREAM CROSSING

Several streams run through the woods. This one looks innocuous today but when in spate is difficult to cross. The plan was to construct a 3.0 m length boardwalk to give a sufficiently elevated dry route across the stream. We also, in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, used some recycled and refurbished cross-treads from an earlier project.

On a windless day, with temperatures reaching the dizzy heights of 8 oC, it was a pleasure to be working in sunlit woodland. Here's how Andrew and Frank sorted the job.

1. A good base structure avoids later problems!

The bearers are in place. The stringers are in place. The stringers are level both lengthways and crossways. The stringers are nailed to bearers and the whole framework is anchored by four stobs.

2. The end product

Cross-treads have been checked, graded and nailed in place. Some staples have been added to improve grip and kickboards have been fitted at both ends.
Visible is a blue pipeline. We presumed that this is a water supply and took great care not to disturb it!
Overall, this was a straightforward task (i.e. there were no glitches!) carried out in ideal working conditions. We were pleased with the outcome.
