On the first CROWS working day of 2023 Catherine and Kasher tackled two issues which had been reported over the festive break.
1: Mankinholes stile
A stile on Todmorden FP 177, a Calderdale Way link path from Long Shaw Lane to Haugh Rd, needed attention as one of the step-legs had rotted.
After unloading our tools and timber on Long Shaw Lane for a long, long carry to the stile, a knight in shining armour (AKA a farmer with an ATV and trailer) arrived........ and kindly transported all of the items across the fields to our work site. Many thanks.
The stile gods must have been with us today as the rotten leg was easy to extract, the new leg went in without too much pain and the spirit level showed the leg was vertical and the treadboard horizontal.
2. The timber was certainly rotten! |
1. This leg needs replacing. |
4. All now secure |
3. Finishing touches |
2: Common Bank Wood, Upper Eastwood
During the recent heavy rains the drainage through Common Bank Wood had become a problem. The normal water channel at the top of the wood had become blocked and the water was flowing down the trackway.
At the top of this wood there are always problems where the stream and the footpath follow the same line. We managed to clear the gullies of the fallen autumn leaves and the large boulders which had been washed down, and managed to redirect the water into its original channel. This should prevent the track from becoming a quagmire and the sets and causey stones from being undermined.
5. The stream flowing down the trackway. |
6. Catherine sorting out the drainage channel. |
7. The water back where it should have been! |
Today's work has been funded by individual donations to CROWS. Many thanks.
