On a fine but cold day Ian V and Kasher decided to work in a sheltered location. Mmm! Sheltered it might have been but unfortunately it was on the sunless side of the valley! Brr!
None the less, we embarked on our final session to improve the footpath (Tod 082) that goes through Scaitcliffe Woods . . . .
*Armed with pruning saws, bow saws and loppers we made light work of the rhododendrons which were blocking the path.
*We cut and cleared the tree which had fallen across the upper reaches of the path.
*We sorted out a couple of trip hazards on the steps: - namely, redundant metal "stobs", which were standing dangerously proud of the risers.
2. The fallen tree which was across the path has now been cleared. |
1. The rhododendrons blocking the path. |
*We added staples to improve grip on the treadboards of the stile at the top of the wood (just below Flailcroft).
*We then moved to the section of Tod 082 which runs up towards Robinwood. Again we were cutting back overhanging trees and the ubiquitous rhododendrons.
*Snow showers started but they were short-lived so it was on to the path (Tod 080) which goes from Siggett Lane, through Ewood Wood towards Todmorden Edge. This beautiful route had a number of places where the encroaching rhododendrons were causing people to walk perilously close to a steep edge. Severe pruning made the way safer.
3. Clearing invasive rhododendrons. |
4. Easier now for walkers. |
Today's work was funded by individual donations to CROWS. Many thanks to all.
