TODMORDEN - Hudson Bridge and Blue Bell Lane and RIPPONDEN - Off A58

Team 1:

On a windy but warm (for November) day Catherine and Kasher returned to the track leading towards Hudson Bridge (Bridleway Tod 049) to continue clearing the turn-bys and the track-side drainage channels. Wielding mattocks and azads certainly keeps one warm on a day like this!

We hope that the work done will now keep the majority of the water off this popular track.

1. The turn-by where the water is now
flowing reasonably well.

2. The cleared ditch at the side of the track.

3. Another culvert to be cleared!

4. Catherine sorting out the culvert.

We then moved to tidy-up the outdoor baptismal area near Todmorden 062, which leads off Blue Bell Lane. This baptismal pool was used by the nearby Shore Baptist Chapel before baptismal facilities were constructed inside the chapel.

The area was cleared by CROWS a few years ago but has now become overgrown with brambles and nettles. After crawling under the electric fence which had been erected to keep cattle away from the edge of the area, we managed to clear the steps and cut back the encroaching brambles. When the cattle are moved we should be able to cut-back the areas at the top of the steps and along the banks of the stream that flows into the baptismal pool.

5. The hidden baptismal area.

6. The cleared area.

Team 2:

Mick and Ken (welcome back) went to erect a bridleway marker post on Ripponden 147 which is the path from the A58  towards Blackstone Moor. The marker post (a replacement for a missing fingerpost) now indicates the r-o-w down the route variously known as Dhoul's Pavement / the Roman Road / the Old Packhorse Road!

The team then installed two new yellow-topped marker posts and reinstated other broken or misplaced marker posts along a short section of the Yorkshire Water permissive path towards Manshead.

7. Reinstated marker post.

Today's work near Shore has been funded by a kind donation from Tod Walkers (http://todwalkers.org.uk). The work off the A58 has been funded by individual donations to CROWS. Many thanks.
