RIPPONDEN : HEYS LANE

 RISHWORTH - Heys Lane

Ian S and Paul continued work on repairing a stile at the bottom end of Heys Lane, where the footpath leads off in the direction of Ringstone Edge Reservoir. A previous work party had cleared overgrown stone steps leading up to the stile and replaced a rotted stile leg. Our job today was to finish off the stile repair.

Ian removing the stile cross pieces.

On investigation both stile posts were rotten at the base and the majority of the cross rails had seen better days so it was a case of dismantling the stile structure to install new posts and to see what we could re-use.

Cross rails taken off and one new post installed.

We had brought along one new post as we thought the second post was reusable, however this was not the case. Fortunately, we had also brought with us a finger post to replace a previous one that had rotted. With a bit of ingenuity, we used the finger post as the second post!

Here we are positioning the new cross rails!

Fixing the two new stile posts into place we then moved on to nailing on three new cross rails to a repositioned fence post.
New cross rails installed and finger post upright in position.

The site was tidied up and side gaps filled in to prevent livestock escaping. The finished article:

Job complete!
