Pennine Way Dicks Lane to Stoodley Pike

A sunny September day for Andrew, Neil D, Ray and Stella to tackle the few remaining jobs on our Pennine Way list.

First of all the familiar work-out of carrying tools and a 3-metre finger post up the hill from Swillington.

Then Ray and Andrew replaced the fingerless finger post at the western end of Dicks Lane - a tricky job as one of the flags is positioned low on the shaft and to keep it at a safe height they could not drop the post in as deeply as it really needs. They will return next week to brace the post so it is really secure.

.

Out with the old...
..and in with the new.

Just needs a bit of bracing.

Meanwhile, Neil and Stella started on the job of clearing the 18 turnbyes, between here and Stoodley Pike, which are buried beneath several inches of drought-compacted sand - quite hard going and we are nowhere near finished.  We shall return, hopefully with reinforcements!

Is there anything underneath here?

Yay! - who knew?

Clearing these should keep some water off the path once the rain starts again.

And on our way home we stabilised and waymarked a wobbly fingerpost in Callis Wood.

Could do with a longer arm...
