Knotts Wood: footpath Todmorden 086.
Ken and Frank H worked on the structural problems associated with a gate on this well-used right-of-way.

1. Tired old gate. |
Here's the old gate. There are several issues.
End of session
*The hinge post wobbles alarmingly because it is only 250 mm into the ground!
*The hinges are rusted and secured with a selection of screws, staples and bent nails.
*The gate palings and cross-rails are what might be described as 'a loose assembly'!
*The closure post is very firmly in place but not vertical!
*The stock fence to the left has collapsed and (just out of picture) is flattened nearly to ground level.
*The stock fence to the right is slackly fitted - presumably so it can be removed if vehicle access is needed.

3. New gate:- back view |
The old gate together with its hinge post has been removed. A hole for the new post has been dug into exceptionally hard ground. The rotten remains of three former posts were unearthed - none of them were buried by more than 250 mm! The new post is in to nearly three times that depth. Phew! That raised a sweat!
Hinges of a suitable length have been aligned and screwed to the cross-pieces and the new hinge post as needed.

4. Completed structure |
*Closure loop added
*Diagonal brace and stob fitted to enhance stability of hinge post.
*Stock fence to right straightened with the old gate post recycled as a fence post (just out of picture)
*Stock fence stapled with neat twist finishes to hinge post.
*On stock fence to left, any barbs (near the closure post) removed.
* Banking to right landscaped to allow the gate to open by 90 degrees.
*Section of path near and under the gate tidied and graded.
This is a very popular path. Numerous walkers - with and without dogs - passed during the day and were very complimentary about CROWS' work. We thank you for your support and informative comments.
