CRAGG VALE RIVERSIDE PATH

Ray, Heidi and Rich worked on replacing a boardwalk near Spa Bridge.

The existing boardwalk had clearly deteriorated!

Dismantling the old boardwalk

It was rotten . . . how it held together is a bit of a mystery!

Water channel dug out and new stringers in place

The timber framework was then levelled, secured with stobs and underpinned with stone.

Cross-treads nailed to stringers.

To improve grip in this damp area, staples were put in

Job done!

We had a little time to spare, so we replaced a rotten step and removed some of the balsam growing around the Spa.

This boardwalk was funded from a legacy left to the West Riding Area of the Ramblers' Association by the late Gerald Hardwick (1934 - 2020), a keen walker who loved being out in the countryside.

There is a section on our website about leaving money for path improvements as a memorial. See https://crows-coop.co.uk/help-us-with-our-work/help-us-with-funds/

Meanwhile, back at the depot . . . the ever-versatile Ginny was

1. Preparing a gate for a job on Friday

And (some time later out in the field)

2. Clearing the approach to Friday's task.

3. Clearing the area nearer the work site.

More about this later in the week (heat wave permitting). A ruined stile will be replaced with a gate, and (out of picture) a stock fence will need re-instating. Could be tricky . . . or perhaps not! The excitement mounts!
