TODMORDEN: Guide Quarry

Guide Quarry: Tree enclosures continued . . .

A warmish day for Ray and Frank H to continue with the construction of tree enclosures. Two tasks were undertaken:

Task One (also known as "we've had better ideas!"): Constructing a tree enclosure using re-cycled rails from an old enclosure'

1. Making the pilot holes for new posts.
Unfortunately the ground was rock-hard,
so all the holes had to be dug out by hand!

2. Some (long) time later. Four
corner posts eventually in place.

3. By lunchtime - a very late lunch!

Three tiers of rails were added by re-cycling items from an old enclosure. Unfortunately the rails were rotten at the ends, warped, contained holes and were of mixed lengths and cross-sections! Mmm!

Undeterred, we persevered and the end result (as in picture 3) looks quite tidy.

Appearances, however, can be deceptive - think 'It's more of a rhombus, than a square'!

The rails might benefit from a coat of 'creocote' to help extend their lifespan.

Task Two (also known as "This is the better idea!") Constructing a tree enclosure using new materials.

4. All new timbers. Lots of hard digging for
the posts but alignment and fixing the rails
far more straightforward. Half the time and
two thirds of the effort! Hooray!

There is still some work to do here. A couple of trees would be useful and there is still the wire fencing to fix in place.
Today's work was supported by donations from the public and the Woodland Trust. Many thanks.
