Cragg Vale: above Glen House
Frank H and Andrew B (first session) were working on the right-of-way (Hebden Royd 091) that runs down from Smithy Steads to go behind the boundary wall for Glen House and the Coach House.

1. Collapsed stile: down-slope view |
The stile has collapsed and is very difficult to negotiate. Everything wobbles!
Some time later
The right-hand upright is completely rotten at the base and is only held in place by the cross-rails to the left and the dilapidated stock fence to the right.
After discussion with the landowner, it was decided to replace the stile with a pedestrian gate.
2. Area around old stile cleared: up-slope view |
The approach to the stile was strimmed by Ginny in a spare moment (!) earlier in the week.
The old stile timbers were removed by Ken and Frank H in another spare moment (!) in mid-week.
The old right-hand upright, as in the picture, is sound so will act as the closure post for the new gate.
The tangled stock fence to the left will be sorted and re-attached.
3. All new: gate, gate-post, closure loop, upper cross-rail and additional fence post. |
The gate-post is in place (some rocky ground!) and braced with a diagonal strut. The gate has been hung so it closes against the former stile post.
A new fence post has been hammered-in to help hold up the stock fence.
The stock fence has been re-tensioned and fixed to the gate-post by the traditional 'staple and twist' method
We were pleased with the end result. It is safe, secure, functional, durable and, as far as a gate can be, aesthetically pleasing!
Today's work was funded by a donation from the landowner. Many thanks.
