RIPPONDEN/BARKISLAND

Today, Lynda and new volunteer Linda H worked on the path near the Sonoco plant, below Barkisland. Following the storms, a tree had fallen over the recently repaired boardwalk.

 All clear now .....

We then decided to take out a couple of dead branches nearby that could 'go' in the next storm.

The main job of the day was to reinstate the channel to the left hand side of these steps, which were a complete quagmire due to water pouring down from the hillside above.

Taken from the top of the steps: shows the beginning of a channel cut across the top step and down into the newly dug out channel at the side of the steps to divert the water away.

Good news! The digging revealed a drain! With the mud cleared out of the drain, the water started to run down the channel and not down the steps. However, it is unclear at the moment how much water is flowing through the drain itself - time will tell!

Below the steps was another job - to improve the path which had been scoured out with stones and mud from recent rain. We made an attempt to level this off,

Easier walking now.......

And finally, Linda dug out another channel at the side of some more steps further up the path . These steps are in poor condition and will need to be replaced at some stage. A good day's work in very muddy conditions!

This work was funded by Ripponden Parish Council as part of the Barkisland Village Walks project
