Gut Royd Wood: steps re-visited
On an ideal working day -(fine, calm and cool)- Catherine and Kasher returned to the site of last week's task at the edge of Gut Royd Wood. Consolidation of the tread areas of the steps was the aim:
1. Barrow in a load of aggregate. Luckily, it was a downhill push! |
2. Put a textile layer in place, cover with aggregate and pound . . . . . . and pound . . . and pound! |
3. Nearly done! |
When some drainage work, further up the path, is completed (next week's task?) then this route into the wood should be far less muddy!
Meanwhile . . .
Gut Royd Farm: the chicane
Nearer to Gut Royd Farm, Ian V and Frank H were constructing a chicane on footpath Todmorden 178. It's not often that CROWS build chicanes but the basics are straightforward. Mmm!
1. Select the site. The spades are where the half barriers of the chicane will go. |
2. Work in progress. Two posts in place. |
Commendable concentration by Ian and Frank - eyes on the point of action, good working positions, post braced against movement and correct hammering technique.
The half barrier in the foreground is already in place. Two vertical posts (only one is visible) and three horizontal rails act so to block the left hand side of the path.
The half barrier being worked on will block the right hand side but leave an easy chicane for walkers
4. End of session
4a. Up-slope view. |
4b. Down-slope view. |
All-in-all a pleasing outcome for the day's efforts despite the glutinous mud and water-filled post holes!
Funding for today's task was provided by the landowners. Many thanks.
