IN THE DEPOT AND CHARLESTOWN

 Timber work

An early drop-off by CALVAG boosted our timber stocks so Heidi, with a little instruction from Frank H, was able to practice her power saw techniques and create a supply of risers (100 mm height) and stobs (standard, long & extra long).

Frank H then shaped the top of some marker posts. There is a way to do this using the power saw that is not only quicker but also creates a much neater finish than did our former method of cutting by hand.

The morning's work was fortified by consuming some excellent fruitcake (Jo's Kitchen. Mytholmroyd) and dipping into a tub of chocolates (courtesy of our landlords - thanks to Rob & Peter). No pictures were taken but we can reliably report that, despite a couple of hours on the power saw, all Heidi's fingers were still attached when she set off to cycle home!

Charlestown

In the afternoon, Frank H joined Nigel to survey two possible walling/stile jobs that might be tasks for later in the New Year. Here are the pictures:

Quite a problem - a wall and squeeze stile has collapsed.

The wall to the right of the leaning stoop will have to be dismantled (too many running joints) so the stone stoop can be straightened. The lean is more than it appears! Then the left-hand section of wall much of which has disappeared into the mud will need a rebuild.

This is a technical job - we are giving it some thought!

It's difficult to make out the detail here but a wall corner, next to a wooden stile, has collapsed. Stones have been ineffectively piled back in place. This should be a fairly straightforward re-build.

Additionally the stile's right-hand side upright (not visible in the picture) is showing signs of rot at the base. It is adequate at the moment but is under a 'watching brief'!
