TODMORDEN: TOWER CLOUGH

Another blue-skied Pennine day, ideal for Mick and Frank H to re-build a section of revetment. The location was on Todmorden 72, a path south of Bearnshaw Tower Farm, leading into Tower Clough. The problem was collapsed revetment above a stream and below an unstable bank.

Here are some 'before' pictures.

Revetment collapsed into stream and more of path likely to follow!

We started with plan A - dismantle existing revetment and re-use existing materials where possible to build a replacement and shift the path further to the right of picture. Once we had started on this, we realised there was likelihood of further collapse and the stream bank would also need shoring up. Hence plan B.

Here are some 'work in progress' pictures.

Old timbers removed and Mick contemplating Plan A ...
... or is it Plan B? ... or how about plan (A + B)?

The revetment to the right stabilises the higher banking.
The revetment to the left stabilises the streamside.
Lots of in-fill work required!

Ground conditions were not particularly favourable for hammering posts to the required depth but strenuous use of bar and significant 'grunt' with the mall did the job! Some time later we had:

Plenty of path here! In fact, a metre plus of spacing ... for those anxious about Covid-19!

With footfall and the obligatory Pennine rain, the path will settle over the next month or so. We'll need to return to add more surface 'dressing'- fortunately there's a whole bank-full of it just to the right!

Today's work was funded by Todmorden Town Council.
