STEPHENSON HOUSE

Stephenson House area.

Another cold but sunny day (once the sleet had cleared!) for Ray, Fred and Frank H to work on the minor task of finishing off a stile before starting on the construction of a stream crossing.

While Frank H did multiple carries of tools and timber from the vehicles to the work site, Ray and Fred added an extra rail to last week's stile and then started on the framework for a boardwalk.

Top rail added to stile.
Preliminary work: The stringers are across the stream and
the process of levelling can begin..

The work progresses:

First cross-tread being
temporarily pinned in place ...
... Bearers being inserted.

The bearers support the ends of the stringers. The stringers are screwed both to the bearers and to stobs which have been hammered deep into the ground. Once the lengthways and lateral levels have been checked, cross-treads are nailed in place and kickboards fixed to both ends.

An almost completed boardwalk ... but who
is hanging on by their fingertips ... ?
Clearing the approach paths to the ends of the boardwalk, landscaping and adding a grab pole for unsteady walkers, completed the job.

'Stand back and admire', I said. Mmm! This means you are supposed
to look at the boardwalk ... you just can't get the staff nowadays!

All in all, a day of good progress. We were pleased with the quality of our work and gained enthusiastic comments from walkers using this popular path.

Today's work, to make this route safer and more accessible, was funded by Huddersfield University (Ted Hughes Walks), Mytholmroyd Walkers' Action and individual donations.
