NEAR LUMB FALLS

Mo, Catherine, Ginny, and Ian continued the drainage work on the path from Sunny Bank down to Lumb Falls whilst Frank S and Nigel set to work to tackle a drainage problem on the path from Lumb Falls towards Abel Cote Wood.

We worked all morning in the snow which although quite cold was preferable to working in the rain.

The drainage channel to be cleared is somewhere under this vegetation.

Whilst doing this Mo dropped her phone in the channel but luckily we managed to retrieve it - and even more luckily, after some drying out at home it still worked!

On the path towards Abel Cote Wood Nigel and Frank S found a bog, a reed patch, and lots of sticky clay. We dug cross-drains to move the water away and constructed a causeway of big stones from the fallen wall alongside.

This work was funded by the Huddersfield University Ted Hughes Yorkshire Trails project.

As we were getting rather cold and wet we decided to stop work at lunch time and went to check out a problem at Kitling Bridge. This was a large log that had previously been removed from just upstream of the bridge by Paul and Stella. However, there was some concern that it may get washed down and block the bridge in the next storm. We made an attempt to lift it out but due to its weight this proved to be too difficult and we recommend that it needs to be cut up - a chain saw job for the future.
