We started work with a revetment where the path along the top was getting eaten away, and then fixed one more step below. Yes, it was raining.
Path before and after it had been cleared
New steps seen from above
New steps seen from below
Then we ran into trouble because the bed rock was so near the surface that we couldn't drive in the stobs that hold up the wooden step. So we looked around for some big stones that might makes steps instead. A few feet to the left was a bramble patch and digging there unearthed one or two possible stones, but then we found one that looked ideal. It was long and flat and horizontal. In fact, it was a step already! So we continued digging...
The old steps reappearing after many years underground
Six old steps with a wall each side, now rediscovered
Two further steps carved in the bed rock
Approaching from below you now have a choice - fork right for the old eroded path or fork left for the newly rediscovered old stone steps.
Keep left for the old stone steps
We also cut back the brambles and widened the path just below the steps.
And cut back more brambles further down the hill.
