Two teams out today.
Team 1: Frank H, Ray, Mo, Paul and Fred.
Another sunny Wednesday and another trip to improve the well-used path that goes down from the Walshaw hamlet towards Hebden Water.
Here's the state of the path before work started:
The path just below the picture (above, right) goes down a short section of stone steps that an earlier CROWS team uncovered. Unfortunately the lower stone steps have collapsed to leave a very awkward drop down to an existing wooden step. The following pictures show the situation and the subsequent remedial work (well done Frank H).
Meanwhile, above the stone steps, Fred and Paul added extra wooden steps.
Much further down, nearer Hebden Water, Ray and Mo finished last week's work (more steps!) and then walked up this delightful path to add steps near where Frank H was working. The following pictures show the start of the work and what needs to be tackled next week.
This is a popular path. Walkers, runners and dog walkers (over thirty in total) passed during the day and all expressed thanks for our efforts.
Today's work was supported by National Trust (Hardcastle Crags).
Team 2
Bernard, Dick, Gerald and Stella:- continued working on the path, off Widdop Road, leading down to Gibson Mill. The earlier drainage improvement at the bottom was functioning efficiently but further work was needed higher up; a task carried out by Bernard and Stella.
Meanwhile Dick and Gerald, in an heroic effort, cleared the steps . . . about 150 of them!
After lunch we re-sited a FP sign.
(Sorry no photos due to a software malfunction . . . a technical term for a broken lap-top!)

Another sunny Wednesday and another trip to improve the well-used path that goes down from the Walshaw hamlet towards Hebden Water.
Here's the state of the path before work started:
Deceptively steep path. Needs additional steps between the existing steps and above the top step. |
Top of a stone step just visible but the slope above is much steeper than the picture suggests. |
Stone steps ending with a significant drop. |
The problem solved by squeezing three wooden steps into the gap. |
Meanwhile, above the stone steps, Fred and Paul added extra wooden steps.
Steps winding upwards towards less steep ground. |

Work in progress. An awkward section over tree roots still to be completed. |

Guess what! More steps needed here! |
