Having abandoned a plan to go up to Widdop (high winds and heavy showers forecast), we continued the work on the Calderdale Way started earlier in the week (hoping Pecket Clough would be more sheltered).
Ken, Ian and Lynda finished scraping the bottom of Carr lane while
Rich cut back the overhead vegetation.
|
Carr Lane, needs a good downpour to clean it off! |
Frank S and Gerald went to sort out a blocked gully on Midgehole Lane. The diverted water was wrecking the path below.
|
The path completely scoured out |
|
The gully unblocked |
|
The culprit: - the gully was clogged with discarded plastic |
Meanwhile, at altitude and in the shadow of the Pike,
Frank H and Tristan sorted out a couple of tasks. Actually at about 250 m it wasn't really altitude and due to the lack of sun there was no shadow, but Frank H and Tristan
were there! What did they do?
1. Cutting back:
|
Path partly cleared. |
|
Path cleared of overhanging branches and encroaching undergrowth. |
2. Fixing a wayward marker-post:
|
Loose marker-post |
|
Marker-post back in place:- rock solid and vertical! |
Then they joined the other CROWS to scrape the mulch off the track (called Roy Gate) that runs up from Kitling Bridge then down to Midgehole.
The labour was intense and the effort so sustained that the team could have been mistaken for a chain gang of inmates from some mid-western US State penitentiary . . . but with a Yorkshire accent!

Synchronised scraping |
|
Azad work in progress |
It was great fun to uncover some very old stone surfaces that haven't been seen for many a year.
|
A dramatic before and after |
|
Above Kitling Bridge |
The work was funded by a grant from the Calderdale Way Association.
Probably another two work sessions are needed to finish the job.
