OLD TOWN PATHS

Working on several paths around Old Town which are used by local residents.

Club Houses to Hurst Road
This once important direct route to get workers down from Old town to the Mills in Hebden has now become overgrown and wet. The aim is to bring it up to a standard so local people can continue to use it.

Starting from the bottom....

Gerald and Rich cleared the causey stones and widened the path up from Hurst Road.
A good before and after
Several sections also needed cutting back.

Bottom section cleared and blackthorn cut right back
Stuart and Richard J worked in the first field clearing the stone edging to create a dry line. They also cleared any wall stones that had fallen onto the path.

No need to get wet feet on this section
They then went on to have a first go at dealing with a tricky drainage problem.

Meanwhile, just above Old Laithe, for Paul and Frank H it was a day of ditches, steps and in-fill.

'In the last ditch, in the last ditch,
I'll think of you . . .'
(Iggy Pop: Lust for Life 1977)

The day started with Paul demonstrating how close to a ditch he could reverse his vehicle without it actually toppling over! The answer for this unintentional manoeuvre was about 5 cm! Fortunately, with hefty pushing and a crisp hill-start, disaster was averted and we could get on with the tasks we were supposed to be doing. Namely:

Ditch 1 in progress: Revetment in place to protect the
path and to help channel water down the ditch.

Ditch 2 in progress: Revetment matched into existing step to help channel
water off the path and on towards the main ditch (not visible in picture).
Exemplary pose by Paul, but you might also notice an extra
step in place and the tread area consolidated with infill.
It was a magnificent South Pennine Day; fine, warm and sunny with excellent all-round views. However there was a longish push for barrowing the in-fill and some tough ground conditions for driving home the stobs and digging the ditches . . . but how else could you get a good quality all-day upper body workout!

Finally Dick and Fred strimmed 3 overgrown paths

All the work today was funded by Wadsworth Parish Council
