TODMORDEN - Scaitcliffe - the end is in sight . . . or is it nigh!

Another Friday and another visit to Scaitcliffe Wood! Each week when we finish a work party we say "only another 12 or so steps to build" . . .  each week we say this, but this time we are nearly at the "12 steps remaining" stage!

Catherine, David, Kasher and RJ enjoyed the seasonal excitement of walking on marbles (AKA acorns) with a steep drop on one side as we continued constructing new wooden steps, and rebuilding and repositioning old stone steps. This path through Scaitcliffe Wood eventually links with the steps near Flailcroft (which CROWS renovated a couple of years ago) and is part of the route on one of the Christopher Goddard 'Woodland Walks'.

We were pleased to see three walkers on this "interesting" path. It's well worth walking but "sureness of foot" is recommended as it's a typical example of one of those Calderdale paths which is easier to walk up than to walk down!

Today's task has been funded by individual donations to CROWS. Many thanks to all such contributors -  you are helping to make the paths of the Upper Calder Valley more pleasant and safer for all.

Today's 'Jenga' challenge (the before shot!).

RJ - chair of the planning meeting?

Stones repositioned and supplemented with
wooden steps infilled with shale.

RJ and the new wooden steps.

Work in progress: flight now easier to negotiate.

Catherine about to firm up the
stobs for a new step.

Kasher also on stob bashing-in duty.

Repositioning stone steps which had "slipped"
and become hidden under years of leaf mold.

Catherine and David sorting out and packing
the new stone steps. Spot the Friday CROWS'
sartorial elegance . . . looks like matching
gloves . . . or is it just one pair shared?

Five  "new" steps now in position.

Today's fungal offering . . . but beware of mycotoxicosis!
