CRAGG VALE - Castlegate

The Cragg Vale river path follows the river closely for much of its route, but from the Paper Mill to Castlegate New Bridge the banks of the river are too steep and narrow to walk along. Instead, walkers take the concrete track up to Castlegate and walk down the road to New Bridge. But, as an alternative, you could take the permissive path around Castlegate Mill Pond, see map. This takes you down to the mill pond and along the top of the dam wall, and gives dramatic views of the gorge and the water gushing over the weir below New Bridge.

Andy and Frank S were there today to clear the vegetation that had grown up over the summer and obstructed the path. We cleared the steps down from Castlegate, then the path along the wall, and finally we went back and cleared the track down to the Paper Mill.

This work was funded by Cragg Vale Community Association. Thank you for your support.
