A fine day saw an 'early bird' gang of CROWS waiting to unload a timber delivery from CALVAG. They weren't the only early birds as, overhead, a skein of geese was in 'marching order' heading due East presumably to winter quarters where food would be more plentiful.
They looked just like this . . .

The large delivery of timber was stored in the depot and CROWS work gangs departed to various sites (see other blogs) with Nick and Frank H going to tasks at Blackshaw Head and Hebden Bridge.
i) Blackshaw Head
The job at Lower Rawtonstall was to replace a markerpost where a bridleway (Blackshaw 032) running West to East has a bridleway (Blackshaw 036) as a Northern offshoot and a footpath (Blackshaw 038) as a a South Western offshoot. (see map).

Here's the work progress:

3. Old post. Rotten at both ends . . . . . . and probably in the middle. |

4. Not a caltrop! . . . but the excavated end of the old post nailed with 'deadmen'! |
The new post was installed and waymark disks fixed in place . . . to give . . .

5. Neat, visible but unobtrusive. |
We also re-fixed the wooden 'flag' to a nearby fingerpost. Not much excitement here but we did get an 'after' picture.

These minor but useful tasks were funded by Blackshaw Head Parish Council. Many thanks.
ii) Hebden Bridge.
The road, Spring Grove, ends at Foster Mill Bridge (a packhorse bridge over Hebden Water near the archery field) and a steepish cobbled track (fp Heptonstall 004) winds uphill towards Slater Bank. A footpath (Heptonstall 054) which branches off to the right towards Hollins is also a Calderdale Way Link Path (see map). This junction needed re-waymarking.

The Detail:
The junction was originally marked by a post fitted with waymark disks, but because of problems with ground condition an alternative was required . . . If in doubt use the simplest solution!

3. Replacement: Footpath disk and Calderdale Way footpath/link path disk mounted on a board and screwed to the wall. |
This straightforward task was funded by general donations to CROWS. Many thanks.
Nick and Frank were able to return quite early to the depot so had time to cut a supply of 'stock' (risers, cross-treads, kickboards, stobs and stile step legs) as well as cutting, drilling and bagging-up specific items for a boardwalk task next week. The excitement mounts!
