Ramsden Farm area: Stile 1
Where right-of-way Todmorden 138 leads off Ramsden Lane in the direction of Horse Pasture a dilapidated stile gives access to Ramsden Hill (see map). Today's task for Steve and Frank H was to make a start on replacing this stile.
Many thanks to Kasher who transported a supply of timber to the worksite.
Today's work was funded by Todmorden Wind Farm Through CFFC (Community Foundation For Calderdale). Many thanks.

1. Worksite: The blue 'pin' marks the spot. |
The detail.
On a day that started warm and got hotter and hotter as temperatures topped 30 oC, Frank and Steve sweated to remove the decaying posts of the previous stile(s)!

2. Before: old stile with collapsed steps and side-posts that are rotten at ground level |

3. Work begins: Old stile and some of its 'ancestors' removed. |

4. Progress: New stile side-posts in place. |

5. Halfway! Two cross-rails fitted and the higher step in place. |
This was decent progress given the conditions. Temperatures soared. We took 'water' breaks every hour, battled with rocky compacted ground to remove 'stumps' of numerous posts and battled again to dig deep enough holes for the new side-posts.
Next week's session should see the job finished with the lower step in place, two more cross-rails attached, some lateral bracing and general tidying of the site . . .
. . . Then, less than 100 m down the track, there's a stile/sagging boardwalk/rickety fence combination that needs attention - it's on the list!
