CRAGG VALE: deja-vu

Cragg Vale: slim-line gate number 2

In high humidity - the midges loved it - Andy and Frank H worked about 100 m below last week's task on the footpath Hebden Royd 119. This path branches off the minor side road running south over Bod Bridge just beyond the Hinchliffe pub. (see map).

1. Location map: The blue 'index' marks the spot!

The task was similar to last week - a squeeze gap for pedestrians needed a suitable gate so that the use of a heavy field gate would not be necessary.

Today's work was funded by the landowners. Many thanks.

The detail.

The original squeeze gap was blocked by the remnants of a gate that had been hinged creatively on a wooden post lashed with cable ties to the sturdy metal post of the field gate (see picture 2).

The plan was to hinge a new gate on a post embedded to the right of the gap in picture 2 such that the gate would close against the field gate's metal post. Mmm! Lots of heavy digging, painstaking alignment and vigorous packing.

4. The hole progresses:  "Dig on, Andy - 0.9 m depth needed!"

5. Nearly there: Hinge-post firmly in
place and the gate is now being attached.

A strong closure spring was fitted so the gate would close automatically and a closure loop was fixed in place for additional security. It still remains, however, a narrow (ish) squeeze gap (see picture 6) . . .

Side-rails have been fitted (one of them is anchored to the wall to provide additional bracing for the hinge-post) and the area around the gate has been landscaped.
Just as we finished a large, affable, black dog appeared taking its human for a walk. They both gracefully negotiated the new gate/squeeze gap. Unfortunately, we failed to get a photo! . . .  but the gate got two nods of approval.

As with last week's task we were happy with the outcome. Today's gate, also constructed in CROWS' workshop, closed exactly against the existing metal post and the whole structure is safe, secure, functional  . . . and aesthetically pleasing!
