RIPPONDEN - railway bridge & riverside path

Jerry, Clare, Angus and Rich went to tackle a number of issues in this area.

The public footpath going off the riverside path goes over an old railway footbridge. The steps down to the old railway track were in poor condition and the path up to Quaker Lane was overgrown, The steps on the riverside path were covered in mulch and the riverside path needed cutting back. Today's work was funded by Calderdale Council Highways.

The details

Angus repaired a finger post where the flag had finally given up the ghost.

Top taken off. re-shaped and waymarked.

The main task today was to clear the the old railway footbridge so that a safety inspection can be carried out in a few weeks time. The steps, the bridge bed and the approaches were all cleared.

Bridge deck and approaches all cleared before lunch

Awkward steps cleared for inspection

It is a lovely bridge, but has safety issues. Hopefully these will be resolved after the inspection.

The permissive path down to the old railway track was waymarked and the steps were cleared of mulch and a rotten step was replaced.

Steps now easy to use

The path up to Quaker Lane was cut back and and a survey for step replacement at the top was carried out.

After this, we headed back down to the riverside path where we cut back the brambles, cleared the stone steps to Pretoria Bridge, cut back the riverside vegetation and dealt with some drainage issues.

Apart from the bridge issue, our visit made it clear that more regular maintenance is needed on this popular riverside path.
