On a beautiful day, Ian S, Steve and Andy tackled the repairs to a stile in Lumbutts. The stile is below the Top Brink pub and above Folly Dam (on Todmorden 174).
The state of this stile, on what is a popular route, was reported to CROWS a week ago. Both steps on this stile had rotted away and, unsurprisingly, people were finding it impossible to negotiate using only the cross-rails!
We have replaced both the steps but only one of the stile side-uprights. The other upright was still in a good condition and just needed to be re-embedded and stabilised.
The stile is now safe to use. However, we will be back to change the cross-rails and, if agreed with the landowner, install a dog gate.
Many thanks to the Top Brink pub for allowing the team to park in their car park whilst doing today's work.
The work has been funded by Todmorden Harriers, Flower Scar Fell Race. Many thanks.
The original stile - both legs rotten and sheep netting reinforced with baler twine! |
New side-upright in place and holes for the step-legs being prepared |

End result: One safe, easily negotiated stile. We will return to replace the cross-rails and perhaps install a lift-type dog gate. |
