TODMORDEN - Gaddings to Warland Reservoir

On 15 November 2023, one of the worst days of last year, Ian V and Kasher went to look at the problem route between Gaddings Dam and Warland Reservoir. We went there again today with the aim of devising a plan to sort out this route.

The path has dried significantly since we last reviewed the situation . . . . and we now may have a plan! However, we will be discussing this with other CROWS to decide if a safe crossing of the 3 m  gap between the two ends of the stone causey path is actually achievable.

Ian considering Plan A (or was it Plan B . . . Plan C etc?)

One of the marker poles placed near to the
end of the causey path.

Sunken causey stones are down there somewhere!
The question is: "How far down?"!

We spent some time measuring distances, testing depths, considering options, discussing logistics and having useful conversations with the numerous walkers who were using this route

We were also joined by a mountain biker who seemed to think that our warning cries of "Stop!" and "Don't try that!" and "Deep Mud!" did not apply to him. Fortunately, the bog is not as deep as it was a few weeks ago so he was able to scramble out muddied and (thankfully) uninjured to head off in the direction of Gaddings Dam for a therapeutic rinse!

Negotiating this route needs extreme care. Please ensure you walk well away from the current line of causey stones and avoid the worst of the bog - at times it can be more than 2 m deep!

Oh dear! . . . we did warn you!

Thankfully the MTB rider was able to extract
himself without too many problems.
