WADSWORTH

Out and About in Wadsworth Parish

Three teams were out today working in different areas in the Wadsworth parish.

All work was funded by Wadsworth Parish Council. Thank you.

Team 1: Seed Hill:

Andrew and Ian S tackled a neglected and overgrown footpath leading down from Seed Hill in the direction of the Dodd Naze Estate. The eroded and rutted path is a perennial underfoot problem for walkers. We decided to install six steps on a lower, steeper section where slippery, rough, rocky ground was difficulty to negotiate.

Work progressed! Six steps were installed and back filled with a temporary stone step added at the bottom end. We will return to complete the job with two more steps. We also cut back brambles and widened the path. It certainly looks much improved although further work will be required.

Team 2 Old Laithe and Keelham Lane

Meanwhile Ray and Paul worked on three sites; replacing a rotted way mark post on the footpath from Old Laithe, repairing a stile above Keelham Lane, and finishing off a gate post near Smeekin Pike.

After we had replaced a rotted waymark post by Old Laithe we then parked up at Latham Farm and carried tools and materials along part of the Calderdale Way to a field stile that gives access to Keelham Lane. The longer legs of the stile had rotted and needed replacing. The new legs were braced and a new tread board added:

Job completed!

We then went on to our third and final site; a new gatepost near to Smeekin Pike. This was to finish off the gatepost by adding a bracing strut and securing side lats:

Team 3 Shawcroft and Slack House Lane area.

Stella and Jerry repaired a stile, installed two steps and widened a section of the Calderdale Way that leads up from Shawcroft Cottages and over Slack House Lane toward Bog Eggs Edge.

Cross-rails on the stile on the Calderdale Way by the entrance to Moor Side Farm had rotted away and were replaced.

Work in progress

All done!
Two additional steps were added to a section of the Way that descends toward Shawcroft Cottages. Above this a tough invasive bush that tends to 'strangle' a section of the path was tackled. The team were joined by Nick but the bush root system proved to be very obstinate though some progress was made. We will return to tackle this again!
