TODMORDEN - Whirlaw Common

The causey stones on Whirlaw Common, which are on the route of both the Calderdale Way and the Todmorden Centenary Way (Tod BW 019), are often submerged. Despite CROWS trying to clear the causey stones (at least annually) there is a 150 m section of the path which is often impassable. This means that walkers tend to create a diversionary route through the soft rush above the stone path.

Ginny, the drainage guru, and Kasher spent the morning trying to reopen drainage channels and to get the water off the stones. Some success was achieved! The long term nature of this success will depend upon whether the cattle are allowed back onto this section of the moor and whether users of the bridleway inadvertently block the drainage channels we've created.

The submerged causey stones.

Sometime later: a slightly drier route (plus Ginny).

Although there is still some surface water
the route is passable with care.

Today's work was funded by Todmorden Town Council. Many thanks

Thanks are also due to the owners of Windy Harbour Farm who allowed us to park nearby. It certainly meant that we did not have to carry our tools quite so far.
