TODMORDEN - Various Locations

There were three teams out from Todmorden today:

1)    Catherine and Kasher: Completing the repairs of the stile on the TCW below Bearnshaw Tower on Todmorden FP 071.

2)    Neil Mc and Ken: stile repairs off Doghouse Lane on Todmorden FP 106.

3)    Mick, Neil M and David: Waymarking of the Geology Trail on Todmorden Moor - partially on Todmorden BW 098 and partially on open access land.

Today's work has been funded by Todmorden Town Council. Many thanks.

Details:

1) Stile below Bearnshaw Tower.

Catherine and Mick started the work here last week by excavating and removing the rotten legs of this two step stile on the TCW. Today's task was to put in new legs and replace the treadboard; a relatively straightforward job as all the hard work had already been done!

We also stabilised the stile framework as one of the uprights has started to rot - this will need replacing in the not too distant future.

2) Stile off Doghouse Lane.

This stile is in a great location overlooking Todmorden and all the teams helped to carry tools and timber to the worksite for Neil Mc and Ken to reinstate the two steps. This task was straightforward because for once, thank goodness, the stile had NOT been built over the footings of an old wall. Hooray!

The start of the session: This stile has seen better days!

Work in progress: Neil Mc positioning
one of the lower step legs.

End of session: One tidy, re-furbished two-step stile.

3) The Geology Trail:

Many of the marker posts on this interesting trail had rotted (attritional weather) or been broken (attritional cattle!). Today's team of Neil M, David and Mick reinstated any salvageable posts and replaced a number of others. The first part of the Geology Trail follows a bridleway (Tod 098) but some of the route is then on open access land. Consequently, we have marked the trail firstly with blue and white posts and then, on the open access part of the route, with white-topped posts. We will return to install additional posts and to re- paint the surviving original white-topped posts.

Into the mist . . . but at least the posts stand out.
