Carrs Farm - a neat gate.
It was an intermittently sunny and sultry day for Paul, Ray and Frank H to work near the junction of paths (Wadsworth 078 and Wadsworth 077) between Carrs Farm and Snow Booth.
The task at this waymarked corner was to install a pedestrian gate in the fence line so the gap in the dry-stone wall could be accessed. The basics of the task were:
i) detach the wire stock-fence from three posts (two rotten, one sound).
ii) dig out the two posts that acted as 'sentinels' to the wall gap.
iii) install and firmly embed a hinge-post and a closure-post for the pedestrian gate.
iv) add bracing struts to both posts.
v) add side rails to bridge the gap between posts and wall.
vi) hang the gate.
vii) fit gate stop, closure spring and closure loop.
viii) re-fit wire stock-fence and barbed strand as appropriate.
Phew. It was a long session! Sweat flowed freely!
Today's work was funded by Wadsworth Parish Council and 'Wadsworth Walking Market'. Many thanks.
The detail.
1. Before work started:
The wall gap with one rotten waymarked post (to the right) and a sound half-round post to the left. Not quite vertical comes to mind, but at least they are symmetrically splayed!
Quality control team keen to assert their rights . . . and that was before we could even shake a spade!
The work begins:
The hinge-post is firmly in place (and vertical). Ray is either looking for his contact lens or excavating the hole for the closure-post.
Gate being hung. Grim determination all round as lunchtime beckons! 'Please Close The Gate' sign in place . . . but will walkers read it? Mmm!
Both gateposts installed. Hinge-post braced and side-rails fitted. Gate hung . . . and it fits!
