Stella, Ken and Rich removed the old bridge on the permissive path from Chapel Avenue. The bridge had rotten struts and was in danger of collapsing - ten years in damp woodland had taken its toll.
Work funded by Friends of Nutclough. Many thanks.
The details
Having taken off the treads, we discovered that the main struts had completely rotted. They fell apart as we handled them - someone could have had a nasty accident!
We wanted to make sure that the new bridge was well above the stream, so we dug it out and decided to put in a narrower bridge, well away from the water.
Once the site was clear, we had to dig out the path to install the new struts. What should have been a relatively simple job was made more complicated by hitting bedrock.
However, once the structure was secured in place fitting the slats was an easy job.
We decided to add staples to the bridge in case the conditions made it slippery.
The final product looks good, but we also spotted that several sections of the revetment on this path have 'gone' or are about to, so we will need to come back and sort these.
