Stella, Billie and Rich worked on the bridleway Heptonstall 045. The problem was that water flow had turned the path into a deep groove. This made it very difficult for both horses and pedestrians to negotiate.
The path was widened and two steps were put in to reduce the speed of the water flow. The work got the 'thumbs up' from 2 horse riders, 3 mountain bikers and 2 walkers!
The work was funded by Heptonstall Parish Council.
The details
This job was quite complicated. We knew that the path needed widening, but how could we prevent future scouring creating an even deeper groove? We decided to put in two steps - wide enough for horses but such that bikers could either 'jump off' or go around. Time will tell whether this will be sufficient or whether additional steps will be needed.
