Fiddler's Bridge: revetment, path and a step.
A footpath (Todmorden 085) ascends from Fiddler's Bridge (just beyond Lydgate) towards Roundfield. This spectacular path has a section below Eagle Crag and Barewise Wood that needs revetment and steps.
Today's task, continuing the work from last week, involved installing revetment, digging back banking, widening the path, grading its surface, general landscaping and the construction of one extra step at the top of the new flight.
A day that started sunny but blustery, eventually gave way to increasing cloud which delivered a sharp shower just as Catherine, Kasher, Ken and Frank H had finished their tasks. Good timing!
Here's how the day progressed (all photographs courtesy of Kasher):
1. Path area before any work began: steep, slippery and precipitous! |
2. Work in progress: alignment of first length of revetment. |
3. Work in progress: alignment of second section of revetment. Narrow path yet to be widened etc. |
4. Quality control? Walking away in disgust? Mmm! Can't pull the wool over their eyes! |
5. Catherine who, along with Kasher, did a long stint of digging, widening, grading and landscaping. |
6. Top step being installed. Right-hand side of steps already banked and turfed. |
Final outcomes:
7. Up-slope view of the revetted edge and the flight of steps. Neat job, guys! |
8. Down-slope view: steps banked and landscaped; revetment in place and path widened. |
As we were finishing, Mick (who organised the timber and most of the tools) and Neil M appeared to help carry items back to the vehicles. A report on their waymarking mission and the excitement of the gas pipeline on Shore New Road, may follow!
Today's work was funded by the 'Todmorden Wind Farm Fund' accessed through the 'Community Foundation for Calderdale'. Many thanks.
