TODMORDEN: Frieldhurst

Frieldhurst: revetment, bracer and a mystery

A blue-skied, mild start to the day for Ray and Frank H to: i)  fix revetment sections to the crumbling path edge near the stile constructed last week. ii) back-fill this revetment and grade the path leading to stile. iii) add a diagonal bracer and stob to enhance the stability of the stile's tall side-post, and iv) sort and de-nail the remnants of timber from the old stile.

Items i) to iii) went smoothly. The weather, however, deteriorated to become cloudy, chilly and wet so we only got one photograph. Here it is showing the new revetment in place, the banking cut-back and the path graded. A diagonal bracer was fitted later in the session.

1. Graded path leading to the new stile.

We met with numerous walkers, dog-walkers and a solitary runner (thanks for carrying some tools!) and we received many favourable comments about the quality of our work. Much appreciated . . .

. . .  A mystery, however, remains! Last week the timbers from the old stile were stacked ready to be sorted, trimmed and de-nailed. They would then, if suitable, have been used on the Flower Scar Road project to build a single sapling 'enclosure' to go with the others already there. Unfortunately, all but two sections of the old timber had already been taken . . . . . . . . probably with good intentions by a local re-cycler! Mmm!

As the rain started we did a carry of equipment (very heavy) back to the vehicle and drove over to Edge Lane to re-survey a potentially tricky rebuild of a stile - a job for later in March. We have a plan!

Today's work was funded by donations to CROWS. Many thanks.
