MYTHOLMROYD

MYTHOLMROYD - STANNERY END LANE /NAB END; HEIGHT ROAD

It was "a cold and frosty morning" as Ian S and Paul set out in below zero temperatures knowing that their plans for repairing a stile were dashed; the ground was rock hard! Instead we landed at the depot which turned out to be colder than outside! Fortunately it was sunny and temperatures were on the increase so with a couple of small jobs in hand and some survey work in mind we set off.

First port of call was to replace a tread-board near Stannery End Lane above Mytholmroyd. Parking the car at Stake Park we walked to the stile at the bottom end of Nab End Quarries:

Missing treadboard. Ian doing some prep work.

Even though the sun was out it was very nippy! The stile leads onto open access land up to the quarries.

Stile with new tread board.

Following this, we drove up to Height Road and parked by Foster Clough. Opposite Foster Clough Farm the footpath entrance from the main road goes through a narrow gap in the wall into Stoney Lane. The stock proof gate at this entrance became unusable some time ago and needs replacing. Sizing up the situation we measured up for a suitable replacement - a job to do in the new year!

The gateless gap!

Our second survey was the footpath that winds its way up from Height Road, again through a narrow gap stile, uphill to circumnavigate Foster Clough Farm and up to Foster Clough Delph. This stretch of path is difficult to follow around the rear of the farm and many walkers lose their way here:

Where do I go?

Talking with the very friendly landowner we were able to agree on installing a marker post on the corner of the wooden fencing and put in place additional way markers further up the path. Also we noted a rotted stile leg on field stile further uphill. A survey was completed for a new job sheet!

In summary, some satisfactory work completed . . . despite the cold spell!
