WADSWORTH

PECKET WELL

Today, on a grim morning but with the promise of better weather later, Jan and Neil returned to the top of Delf Lane above Pecket Well, where Paul and Gerry worked last week and noted a dangerous stile leading on to the moor with a broken grab post and very slippery tread boards.  From a distance, the stile looked sound but the tall grab post had rotted at ground level and was only kept upright by virtue of the barbed wire and stock fence stapled to it.

Paul and Gerry helped by ferrying the recycled replacement post and all the necessary tools and other materials up the rough track to Delph End (and offering copious moral support!) before moving on to their jobs for the day.

As usual, the post had rotted at ground level, this time with sufficient solid wood above ground to justify the post being salvaged and taken back to the depot for refurbishment and recycling elsewhere.  The underground section, however, was much more problematic and took a great deal of effort to be extracted.  Once removed it was relatively straightforward for its replacement to be fitted into place and packed solid.  The fencing was then re-attached, the treads cleaned and staples added for extra grip.

It look OK from a distance... ...but it is not!

The replacement post in place.
Stile resplendent with new waymarks and anti-slip staples on the tread board...

It looks even better in the sun and without Neil in the frame...

All in all, it was a good, satisfying repair job, funded by Wadsworth Parish Council. Many thanks.
